Meet Lisa Hall, Braille Proofreader at Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired. Lisa proofreads magazines in braille before they are sent for printing. In the past, she has helped out with quality assurance which involved checking braille books to make sure that pages are in numerical order and there are no duplicates. In 2006, Lisa moved from San Antonio, Texas to Cincinnati to start her employment at Clovernook Center. She enjoys her job and has a good work ethic.
“I receive great satisfaction in the work that I do,” said Lisa.
As an infant, Lisa was diagnosed with retrolental fibroplasia, a disease caused by the abnormal development of retinal blood vessels in premature infants, which caused her blindness. A Louisiana native, Lisa attended the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired in Baton Rouge where she learned how to read braille. She also actively participated in track and field, bowling and cheerleading during her time in school.
Since 1985, Lisa has been a devoted member of the National Federation of the Blind which is an advocacy organization that supports individuals with blindness. She has served as past president and secretary for their Louisiana chapter. Lisa also attends their annual convention in Ohio each year and she thinks it is important to educate the public about individuals who are blind to prevent any misconceptions.
“I think it’s important to educate people and businesses about the capabilities of people with blindness. It makes a difference in their lives,” said Lisa.
In her spare time, Lisa enjoys reading, listening to movies (Disney, action, comedies), swimming, horseback riding, going out to eat at Mexican restaurants, listening to music (classical, gospel, country), traveling, playing piano, snow tubing and following her favorite football teams such as Louisiana State University Tigers, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints. She also likes learning about the latest accessible technology available for people with visual impairments.
In 2018, Clovernook Center honored Lisa with the Peter J. Salmon Employee of the Year Award for her exceptional work and advocating for individuals with visual impairments. She is passionate about her job and enjoys working with her fellow employees.
“I like the people at Clovernook Center. It feels like a family to me,” said Lisa.
