Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired is excited to announce BOLDLY BVI™, a FREE virtual event for BVI students and the people that care for them, at 2 p.m. on April 10, 2021. BOLDLY BVI™ is an event at the heart of Clovernook Center’s mission – to enrich the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired by developing the skills necessary to lead active, productive and independent lives.
Here are the TOP 5 reasons why you should register!
1. Enjoy an event with a wholistic and educational approach – BOLDLY BVI™ will encompass three sections: LIVE. WORK. PLAY. Each will feature speakers with visual impairment or blindness who will share their personal stories and lessons they’ve learned. The sessions will be educational, interesting and fun for everyone attending.
2. Listen to a live performance from a renowned American jazz pianist – Clovernook Center is proud to have Matthew Whitaker join us for the PLAY portion of the program. Matthew is a renowned American jazz pianist who has been blind since birth. He has performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Apollo Theater, where, at 10, he was the opening performer for the Stevie Wonder induction into the Apollo Theater’s Hall of Fame. 3. Hear from a Clovernook Center employee – The LIVE portion will feature Clovernook Center’s Brian Anderson. Brian is a collator operator in the Braille Printing House at Clovernook Center. He recently published his first book of poems and will share how he lives his life to make his dreams come true. He will also share a new poem he wrote just for BOLDLY BVI™.
4. Learn from a Supreme Court law clerk – The WORK portion will feature two speakers including Laura Wolk, who currently serves as an Associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Washington, DC. and previously served as a law clerk for the Supreme Court under Justice Clarence Thomas. Laura is an accomplished graduate of Notre Dame’s Law School and lost her eyesight at 15 months of age from retinoblastoma cancer. Laura serves as a tireless advocate for people with disabilities.
5. Welcome the return of a Braille Challenge champion – The second part of the WORK portion of the program will include Camryn (Cammie) Gattuso, a five-time champion of the Ohio Regional Braille Challenge who also attended the National Braille Challenge in Los Angeles when she was in the 2nd grade. Camryn is now enrolled as a freshman at Stark State College and believes being able to use Braille is very important to future success.
